Negative Space Interlocking Design

1 minute read

I am a huge fan of the interlocking nail design. I’m also a huge fan of negative space. Here I’ll show you how to combine the two to get nails that look like this:

Tools Needed:

  • Striping Tape
  • Dotting Tool
  • Liquid Latex
  • Angled Tweezers
  • Small brush

Step One:

You will need to layout your base for the design with striping tape and liquid latex.

  • The interlocking design requires half the nail to be one color, so begin with placing the tape at the diagonal of your nail.
  • Using a dotting tool and liquid latex, lay out your negative space dots along the tape and up your nails. Make sure the latex glob is big enough that you will be able to see it beneath a coat of nail polish. Allow the latex to fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step Two:

Apply a thick coat of polish. You will need to remove the latex and tape before the polish dries, so make sure your coat is thick enough to give you full coverage.

Step Three:

While the polish is still wet, us angled tweezers to remove the striping tape and the latex. If the latex was applied correctly, you should be able to easily see it beneath the polish which will make this stage much easier.

Step Four:

In the event you had some issues with step three (I do!), use a small brush and acetone/your nail polish to remove/add polish to your problem areas.

Step Five:

Using the dotting tool you made your latex dots with, use your polish to make the same design on the other side of your nail.
